SubGenius Family Vacation Part 13 – Red Rock Canyon and Alabama Hills

We had never even heard of Red Rock Canyon; we just stopped there for a privacy break. We later learned it has been used in several movies. Alabama Hills, on the other hand, has been used in over 150 movies and dozens of TV shows. We wanted to spend a week in each place; as it was, we pushed our schedule back an extra day just for Alabama Hills. I had never heard of the place until both Puzzling Evidence and Philo Drummond started telling me about it and showing me their photos. Now Wei and I hanker to see every movie that was ever shot there — they’re all listed in Wikipedia. (Incidentally, Philo broke his leg there on his last visit!) The pretty music in the first half is Flyin’ Ryan Brothers (ryanetics.com) and in the second half features two hard-driving tunes by The Amino Acids (theaminoacids.com) which seemed to go with the chaotic terrain. This particular chunk of home movies has only one actual movie in it, with dialog, in which we clown around. The rest is all stills. Have I mentioned that these movies are made to be paused and examined frame-by-frame if so desired? Well, that’s the idea. We generally took 900 photos a day and culled them down to 300 or fewer for these “slide shows.” Eventually I will post the best of the high-res photos (say, 10 per location) on some hard-to-find section of subgenius.com. In their full-screen, high-res form some are actually worth examining in detail. The beauty of the locations occasionally overcomes the crappiness of the

Hundreds of One-Eyed Rooster Cogburns at Fort Smith’s True Gritapalooza

Fort Smith, Arkansas is the setting and inspiration for True Grit, so on the eve of the new Coen Brothers’ release, more than 500 Rooster Cogburns showed up at the Fort Smith National Historic Site’s gallows to challenge Lucky Ned Pepper in True Grit’s final showdown. Lucky Ned was played by Professional Bull Riders Hall of Famer Denny Flynn, and the crowd was led by Mayor-Elect Sandy Sanders as the Chief Rooster. Men, women and kids of all ages sported eye patches and Marshals badges to turn themselves into Rooster, and dozens arrived in full costume. Our apologies to John Wayne and Jeff Bridges, and to author Charles Portis–this tribute was done out of love for the material! Fort Smith LOVES True Grit! Fort Smith is also the future site of the national US Marshals Museum–www.usmarshalsmuseum.com–honoring the real Marshals that inspired the character of Rooster Cogburn. For more videos and footage about True Gritapalooza events, the real true Wild West stories of Fort Smith, and things to do here, see: www.facebook.com/Gritapalooza, www.fortsmith.org, and the Fort Smith National Historic Site’s website www.nps.gov/fosm.

Airborne 05.18.12: GA Airports, Onex Flies!, EBACE Highlights

Also: Mama Bird Johnson, Lights out For LightSquared, New Cessnas and LearJets, Nextant 400, ACJs, MLX770 Certs, and Aero-Cat-tastrophe! The FAA has just released a report called ‘General Aviation Airports: A National Asset’, which was compiled following an 18-month study to capture the many diverse functions of general aviation (GA) airports. The first customer-built example of the new Onex single-place, folding-wing, aerobatic sport aircraft has flown for the first time. Bill Fisher of Jackson Tennessee flew his AeroVee powered, standard gear Onex on Thursday, May 10th. Bill received the fourth Onex kit sold by Sonex Aircraft, shipped on August 5, 2011. An Arizona court said it will allow a lawsuit against Australian kitplane manufacturer Jabiru Aircraft Company to go forward despite the fact that its headquartered on the other side of the planet. The Arizona state Court of Appeals said that because Jabiru clearly understood that its kits were being sold in the US through a dealer and distribution network, the lawsuit could go forward in Arizona. By all accounts, Evelyn “Mama Bird” Johnson was an amazing woman. Born just six years after the Wright Brothers first flew, “Mama Bird” learned to fly when she was 34 years old and wound up logging over 57-thousand-six-hundred hours … or about 6-and-a-half years … of flight time. By many estimates, she taught over 5000 people how to fly, and was never involved in an accident… the aviation community lost this iconic pilot
